How do I use my ÖKO bottle?

Simply unscrew the cap, fill the bottle with water, make sure that the filter and cap are tightly secured, raise the nozzle, and sip away! You don’t need to wait for the water to filter; an automatic, steady stream will pour immediately through the filter. The first time you use a new filter, you should fill the bottle all the way to the top and then dispense about 1/2 of the water before drinking. Any dark coloring you may see is an indication of harmless carbon residue, not dirty water.

How often do I change my ÖKO filter?

The lifespan of your filter greatly depends on the quality of the water you filter through it. The more contaminated the water, the shorter the life of the filter. We suggest you change it every 50 gallons for best tasting water, but it should be fine for up to 100 gallons with most tap water.

Based on 100 gallons of water, you will get:

  • ÖKO-550 (0.55L) Small Bottle – 750 Refills
  • ÖKO-650 (0.65L) Adult Bottle – 580 Refills
  • ÖKO- 1000 (1L) Jumbo Bottle – 375 Refills

How do I know its time to change the filter?

As a general rule, if water does not look clear, taste clean or if the flow seems to be slower than usual, the filter should be replaced.

How can I tell if I have a level-1 or level-2 filter?

If you purchased your bottle on January 2013 and onwards, check the color of the silicone ring on top of your filter. Red means you have a level-I filter and clear means you have a level-II filter.

Can I drink juice, coffee or tea from my bottle?

ÖKO bottles are designed for filtering and drinking water. You can use the bottle without the filter to drink juices or your favorite drinks, but it is not recommended for hot beverages. Make sure to rinse the bottle thoroughly before you use it again with the ÖKO filter. Juices or beverages other than water damage the filters.

What happens if I use my ÖKO bottle and filter for drinking juices?

Sugar, salt and other substances present in juices, tea and other beverages clog up the filter quickly and will damage it permanently.

How do I clean my bottle?

Depending on how hot your dishwasher gets, the bottle is machine washable. NOTE: the filter itself is NOT machine washable and will be damaged if put through a dishwasher. To extend the life of your water bottle, we recommend washing by hand to avoid potential damage, especially to the threads that screw the cap on. To wash the water bottle, remove the cap (and the filter), place in dishwasher top rack, or use lukewarm water and light detergent. Rinse thoroughly. Repeat if needed.

Can I wash the bottle cap?

Yes. To do this, you should disconnect the filter and Ö-ring carabiner, hand-wash the cap with mild detergent. Be careful that the seal inside the cap does not slip out. If the silicone seal slips out during the wash, follow these steps:

  1. Carefully place the seal back into the cap. Be sure it stays flat.
  2. Put the cap onto the bottle and close tightly to secure the seal back on.

If you notice a leak from the bottle when drinking, repeat steps 1 and 2.

What happens if the seal from the cap comes off?

In rare occasions the seal in the bottle cap may slide out due to excess pressure and vacuum created when closing the bottle. Should this occur, please contact customer service for instructions on re-installing the seal.

How do I clean my ÖKO filter?

You shouldn’t! Unlike basic, simple carbon filters, the ÖKO filter media is made of a high-performance and sensitive material. Subjecting the filter to harsh detergents or soapy or hot water will not only loosen its pores and reduce its performance level but may impair its function permanently.

Will my ÖKO filter fit in other ÖKO bottles?

ÖKO filters work with all ÖKO bottles regardless of size and color.
Note: This does not include the OKOPURETM product.

What if my bottle is defective?

You may return a defective product to us for replacement within 30 days of purchase. Please contact customer service for further instructions. Due to the nature of the product and health and hygiene issues, we do not offer refunds.

How can I order spare parts?

You may order extra ÖKO parts, please contact customer service and we can assist you.

ÖKO Filters & How They Work

ÖKO offers two bottle filtration levels. They produce superiorly efficient filtration with a powerful flow. Our patent-pending Upstream Valve™ returns any backwashed fluid into the “unfiltered” water area for re-filtration and to ensure that every sip is pure, fresh & clean.

ÖKO Level-1 filter is carbon based and it is designed to effectively reduce present chlorine, taste and odor while providing crisp and clean tap water. This filter emits the fastest water flow with effective filtration.

ÖKO Level-2 filtration, originally developed through a NASA grant for space stations, is now available for consumer use. Simply put, it is the state-of-the-art in water filtration technology.

In addition to a 2 micron pore size, the material utilizes a positively charged electro-adsorption (attraction and retention) process to draw and trap harmful agents much smaller than its pore size. Charge fields, activated upon water contact extend 1 micron each to virtually close the pore to any intruding agents. Using built-in silver ions, the material then kills bacteria upon contact. ÖKO level-2 filter lab tests reflect removal of 99.94% of e-coli, 99.997% of cryptosporidium and 99.9999% of giardia lamblia, the most commonly found bacteria in water sources.
A stack of over 400 such pores in the 0.8mm thickness of the filter create a “tortuous path” which a harmful agent would have to travel through in order to make it across.
